Market Position LO1

The phrase 'market position' means how successful a company or business is in their field.
21st Century Fox is a successful company due to the fact that it has subsidiaries that branch off the main company creating a larger target audience for their products. Market share is also a way into finding how successful a company is, this is due to the fact you're able to view their market price.
You can also view the success of a company by looking at their sales unit, this allows you to view how much profit they produced for the product they produced, also you could look at the reputation of the company by finding out weather or not their products are award winning and if they are getting recognition that helps promote their brand.

LO1 Task 2 for Star Wars

Introduction

Hello, my name is Keenen Jeremiah Smith. And I will be writing a script on  'Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith'.

Purpose

The purpose of Star Wars Episode III is to entertain its viewers through spectacle in example of this is the ending scene of the film where Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader) and Obi-Wan have a high in action fight. This creates spectacle due to the fact that the audience will feel enticed amount of visual effects displayed with a spine chilling fight scene.

Genre

The primary genre of Star Wars Episode III is a Sci-Fi movie, this genre is connoted due to the fact that it takes place of a multiple amount of worlds with a multiple amount of different raced life form. Another reason why the genre of this film is a sci-fi is due to the fact that during the movie you can denote a lot of hover mobiles and aircrafts, this connotes that this film is a sci-fi film due to the fact there are quite a lot of futuristic aspects during most scenes of the film. The reason this film relates to the genre is due to the fact that this film allows the audience to feel the full experience of inter-galactic travel by traveling to other worlds.

In terms of the sub-genre of Star Wars Episode III, it is also an Action, adventure and Fantasy. The sub genre is the secondary genre of the film.  I think the reason why this film is also classified as an action, fantasy film is due to the fact that there are a various amount of action scenes during this film that create a lot of spectacle for the viewers. Also the reason why this film comes under the sub genre of fantasy is because there are quite a lot of mystical elements of this film that allow the audience to fantasies about the many aspects that can happen during this film.

The form film is also classified as a feature film, this is due to the film being over 90 minutes long. You're able to buy Star Wars Episode III online, on DVD/Blu Ray, by download or by pirate copy. Due to the various amount of platforms this film has been produced on I get an understanding that this film was designed for a mass audience. The only reason why this film isn't available in cinemas currently is due to the fact that its been out for quite a while now therefore spectacle has gone.

Style

Star Wars Episode III's style is set in a  futuristic universe that seems so real it creates verisimilitude with the audience, this connects more with the audience because they believe that they're actually part of this world due to the verisimilitude of the film.

The reason I think they chose to base this film in the distant future in another universe from ours is because it will allows us as the audience to believe that anything is possible, this is due to the fact that this film doesn't take place in our galaxy so we don't exactly know that this isn't possible.

Content & Meaning

I believe that Todorov has the best description of the narrative in terms of stating that most films have a 'narrative structure', this means the film is built up of an: equilibrium, this occurs when everything within the story is balanced and there is nothing wrong, a disequilibrium, this is present when a problem occurs within the diegesis, and a resolution, this is where everything becomes balanced again but not as balanced as the beginning of the film.

The reason why I think Star Wars Episode III follows this style of narrative is due to the fact that it follows exactly this style of narrative. For example the opening of this film showed a great example of a equilibrium within the diegesis, I know this because within this scene I can denote Anakin Skywalker laughing and joking while flying through the battalion of imperial droids with his master, this connotes to me that he is enjoying the time he is having with his master. The reason why this is the equilibrium of the film is because there are no problems occurring during this scene which means everything is balanced.

The disequilibrium occurs during the film when Anakin joins the dark side. We come to understand that this is the disequilibrium because we can denote Anakin's eyes have turned to a bloodshot golden  colour and he begins to wear a dark robe with a hood. This connotes to us as the audience that his nature has changed due to the fact that his eyes went from normal to bloodshot, the reason he dark robe connotes that he has now changed is because  stereotypically dark colours represent evil, and due to the fact that he is wearing a hood connotes that his has been engulfed by the dark side.

Star Wars Episode III's resolution occurs during the end of the film. This takes place when Obi-wan is finding Anakin's children a new home, we come to understand that this is the resolution to the film due to the fact that it looks like there is peace on the planet, during this scene I can denote a sunset, this connotes to me peace due to the fact that sun sets are considered very peaceful to look at, and by using it during that scene gives the audience a general understand of peace

Mise en scene

Location

Star Wars episode III is set in a galaxy far away from our on a  planet named Currosant, which is commonly referred to as the home of the Jedi within the diegesis of this film. This fits into the narrative of the film well because throughout the film we come to understand that the Sith are slowly fighting to take control of Currosant and wipe out the Jedi.

Costume

The costumes I can denote during the scene I am currently looking at are different for both of the Jedi characters, this is mainly due to the nature of the character themselves. Looking at the costume of Anakin Skywalker I can denote dark robes that are fitted around the antagonists figure, by using dark colours we can connote that stereotypically this character is the antagonist due tot the fact that black is most commonly associated with evil and a negative colour.

But looking at the clothing that Obi-Wan wore you can denote a white  tanned robe which is quite lose around him. To me this connotes that he is the protagonist, I have gathered this information based on the fact that stereotypically we tend to use the colour white to represent good and innocence.

Props

Throughout this whole scene during the disequilibrium of the narrative the primary prop used was the lightsaber, this is because this weapons is commonly used by the Jedi as a weapon of peace and  in the hand of the Sith lightsabers are connoted as weapons of destruction. During this scene the protagonist and the antagonist both use lightsabers as props during this scene but as the scene progresses a difference begins to appear between both of these props. This occurs when Anakin is fighting Obi-Wan and his lightsaber turns from blue to red, this connotes to us a change in his nature meaning he has completely changed. In a sense you can relate the colour of the lightsaber to dominance, by having a red lightsaber you're seen as more dominate due to red being connoted as an aggressive colour in comparison to blue which is more of a calm colour.

Iconography

In terms of iconography, the most iconic feature of 'Star Wars' films are the lightsabers, this is because when most people denote them they automatically connote either hope or fear depending on their colours,

Colours

Within the scene I have been watching colour and lighting have been used to connote to the audience the mood. If you look within this scene there is hardly any light, and the only source of lighting is the lava in the background of this scene, this connoted anger or rage for the audience that viewed this scene, this makes the audience feel the tension within this scene due to the low key and the shadowed environment.

Gestures

During my chosen scene from 'Star Wars Episode III' you can denote a certain gesture that Anakin does during this scene. You can denote Anakin raise his hand in a chocking hold position, this connotes to the audience that he is using the force to strangle his wife. This also reinforces the genre dominance in the male character of the film, due to the fact that Sci-Fi films remind the audience that anything is possible within their genre.

  Sound

During the scene I have chosen you where Anakin and Obi-Wan are fighting you can denote the sound of lava bubbling, this is a diegetic sound because during this scene it would appear to the audience that the actors could also hear the sound of this, which connotes that there is quite a bit of tension/panic currently going on during this scene.

Another example of diegetic sound that occurs during this scene is the sound of mechanical devices screeching and steam pumping out of them. This is diegetic sound due to the fact that audience and the actors are hearing this during this scene which connotes to me that something is disequilibrium due to the fact that the noise they are projecting sounds like they're shutting down.

Non-diegetic sound is the sound that only the audience can hear, this means the characters within the diegesis are unable to hear what the audience is hearing. During this scene the main non-diegetic sound you can hear is the 'force'. This connotes the power they're projecting within this scene without the audience being able to see it, it almost amplifies the power they already have and adds more tension for the audience viewing.

Camera Work

During the ending scene of Star Wars Episode III you can denote that the camera shots they have tried to use during this scene so that the audience get a better understanding of how the characters are feeling is a medium close up. The reason why they have chosen to use this camera shot type is because its not too close, yet not too far away for us as the audience to get a good understanding of how the characters are feeling during the scene

If you look at the opening scene of the end part of the film you can denote that the camera crew had decided to input a medium long shot of Anakin Skywalker to connote how he is feeling through body language. You can denote Anakin standing up tall with an angered expression on his face, this connotes to us that he is furious and is ready to fight. Reinforcing male dominance of the character by use of body language during this scene.

Also during this scene the camera shot type turns into a close up to view the facial expression of Obi-Wan so that the audience understand how he is feeling. During this scene you can denote that Obi-Wan has a look of shock yet disappointment of his face, this connotes to us that he doesn't want to fight Anakin but he has to do it in order to protect others.

Wide shots are done during the scene where Anakin and Obi-Wan are fighting in order to show the location of where their fight is taking place. This gives the audience an idea on how much tension there is based on the wide shot of the location almost making the character look insignificant compared to their fighting location. Due to the location making the characters look insignificant during this scene because of the harsh environmental problems that were occurring the audience would feel more interested, therefore this would create more spectacle

The final scene of the film you can denote a close up of Obi-Wan screaming at Anakin, during this scene the camera crew decided to use a shallow depth of field in order to make the character the main point of focus, therefore capturing more of the emotion he was expressing without loosing focus on him.

Editing

Looking at the editing techniques used during the production of this film you can denote that during one scene you can see that an Action Match shot is used in order to continue a scene where both the protagonist and antagonist are having a conversation. This is seen when Anakin and Obi-Wan are both spinning their lightsabers around each other and this continues onto the next location where they stop spinning their lightsabers and clash with each other.

The next feature of editing I could denote during the scene I had selected was an eye line match. This occurs when Anakin, is laid down on the table and is looking directly at his lightsaber to reach for it using the force. This editing type in a way is very similar to shot reverse shot editing feature in the sense that there is a link between the two images.

Throughout some scenes in Star Wars Episode III you can denote that a form of continuity editing in the form of cross cutting. This has been used in order to change the scene to a new one, this is repetitive throughout to film to capture something that is happening during the same time but during as different scene.

During the final scene the main form of editing the camera crew decided to input during their footage were a mixture of action shots and eye line shots in oder to make the audience feel as if they were actually within this scene while they were watching it. Also a lot of shot reverse shot structures were used during the dialog scene during this part of the film. This shot is also used to show the binary opposition of the two characters by dividing them by age stereotypically by showing dominance by age.

Production Process

Thinking about the pre production stages of creating this film I have come to an understanding that the first step during the process the production crew would have to encounter is developing a script. This is done so that the actors have a general idea on what to say during the recording of the film and in what tone they should say it, this is possible one of the most important parts of pre production due to the fact that you cannot produce a film without a script. But possibly the most important feature of pre production is the creation of a storyboard, this is due to the fact that this is required to inform the camera crew what type of camera shots and angles they would need to use during the production of the film.

Production of the film itself would require the actors and the camera crew to follow both the script and storyboard for the production stage of developing a film. within the production stage of the film, the production crew would have to ensure that they have all the required props, locations and costumes. This is the most crucial stage in terms of actually producing the film itself, during the production stages of this film they would've changed the locations of some places due to it being too dangerous to actually film in these places.

In terms of the post production process of creating 'Star Wars Episode III', I have come to an understanding that when producing some scenes that they couldn't film at due to the danger risk they would have to use a green screen, this is done to make the location look verisimilitude and fits in with the diegesis of the film itself, also the production crew would have to add in special effects and sound effects that fit In with both the specific weapons being used during the scenes and the machines being used also. This is basically the finishing touches in terms of the production process when creating 'Star Wars Episode III' because this is when everything within the film all begins to come together.

Thank You for listening to my script on Star Wars Episode III

LO1 Task 2 Changes

I have recently decided to change the film I have been studying. This is due to the fact that I personally thought that writing a script on 'Big Mommas House' would be hard due to the comedic characteristics within the film. I have recently decided to write my script on 'Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith', this is due to the fact that there is quite a lot of diegetic and non diegetic sound that plays a part during the film, where as 'Big Mommas House' was harder in terms of finding non-diegetic sounds.
