LO3 Task 4

Introduction

Hello my name is Keenen Jeremiah Smith and I have been asked to explain the distribution process my chosen film company.

I will be looking into: What distribution means in general, how distribution of my product has been impacted by technology convergence, the platforms my film is available on, to assess the form of technology and to apply evidence of viewing.

Distribution Channels

The definition of distribution is the action of getting a product to a an audience. Recently my chosen films 'Star Wars Episode III''s distribution has been impacted by technological convergence in a positive way. This is due to the fact that more people are using the internet now meaning digital copies of the film have been produced on a large range of platforms. This means an increase in the distribution of the product meaning more people will purchase this film due to its availability.

In terms of the platforms that 'Star Wars Episode III' has been distributed on: Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube, iTunes, Blu-Ray and DVD. These are easy means of accessing the film on multimedia platforms which make it easier for people on different devices to access the film. Due to 'Star Wars Episode III' being produced on so many platforms it was able to attract a larger audience therefore increasing the distribution rate for both the franchises products and film, therefore increasing the profit for the producers.

Doing my research on 'Star Wars Episode III' I have come to understand that the film is an example of technological convergence. The reason why I think they've done this is because it is an easier means of producing film without wasting too much money. The reason I know this is because it costs a lot of money to produce an analogue version of a film due to the reels expensive, whereas if you were to produce a digital version of the film it would cost less money to produce due to the fact that producing disks are cheaper for the company to produce their final product on, in comparison to film reels which cost a lot of money to produce.

Looking at the viewing evidence from the TV figures of 'Star Wars Episode III' I have come to understand that Lucasfilm has produced quite a high revenue after the production of the film. It originally cost $113 million for the whole production process of the film. Looking at the revenue produced by 'Star Wars Episode III' I can see that all the money they had used towards the production they had gained it back and made a great amount of income at $380,270,577. This indicates to me that Star Wars Episode III in terms of its distribution was very successful at box office.

Looking at the legal side of the distribution of ‘Star Wars Episode III’ I understand that before they could distribute any of their products they has to make sure that their products met the criteria when I comes to meeting the BBFC’s requirements in order to distribute their film product to the market. The BBFC gave 'Star Wars Episode III' a certificate 12, this means it is made to be distributed for a mass audience. This helps the audience know whether or not the film is suitable for a certain age range.

Advertisment

When 'Star Wars Episode III was being advertised duing the relase of the film, the interent wasn't as popular or as used as it is now. This means a lot of the advertisment that went into promoting 'Star Wars Episode III' would've been through printed or televised media. Places you would've seen the print media poster to this film would've been on billboards, busses, posters and leaflets. This is due to the fact that these are quite common means of advertisment back in 2005.

When it comes to how this film was advertised by 21st Centuary Fox, I have come to understand that intergration had taken part within the industry. This be potrayed through advertisment commercials on tv and articles within the news paper. This is an easy method for 21st Centurary Fox due to the fact that they own different subsidaries that work under their conglomerate company of 20th Centuary Fox.

Also due to the fact that 'Star Wars' is considered quite a big franchise gives it notable advertisment within a mass audience due to the film franchise being such a big household name that families would already know from the original films. This brings in more of an audience because quite a lot of people hve watched the old films.

LO2 Task 3

Introduction

Hello my name is Keenen Jeremiah Smith, and I have been asked to assess the age and gender of my chosen film in order to get a better understanding on what kind of viewers my chosen film is trying to attract. Ien Ang and John Hartley suggested that film producers create invisible entities before they undergo the pre-production stage of creating their films. The reason why this is important is because it allows the producers to imagine what their desired character will look like and what his nature is in terms of how they will affect the diegesis. Because if you create a film without thinking out an imaginary entity you won’t be able to get a clear understanding of the characters back story.

The target audience for my chosen film is based around people over the age of 12; this is due to the fact that some of the scenes within the film are considered inappropriate for younger viewers, therefore making the target audience an older audience.

Gender

'Star Wars Episode III' is a sci-fi film set in a distant dystopian future, we are following the story of Anakin Skywalker as he goes down his dark path towards the dark side. During this film there are quite a lot of action scenes. In terms of the gender of 'Star Wars Episode III' I have come to understand that the primary target audience is aimed at males.

I know this due to the fact that the main characters within the diegesis of this film are males. This is due to the fact that stereotypically male characters are considered more dominant than the female character, therefore attracting a larger male fan base. Carl Rodgers '1980' suggested that characters within a film are sometimes looked up to by their target audience as an ideal self, this suggests that the target audience would like to aspire to be like the main character therefore drawing in the male audience more by having Anakin Skywalker as an ideal self for the male viewers.

Another example on why 'Star Wars Episode III' primarily focuses on a male target audience is due to the fact that male viewers are more interested in action scenes, the best example of this is the final scene during the film where Obi-Wan cuts a rage driven Anakin in half. This creates spectacle which draws in a larger audience and due to the fact that male viewers tend to enjoy violent scenes more than female viewers.

The third reason why I believe that this film is targeted at male viewers is because this film includes an ideal partner who is projected as a female. This means this is the character within the diegesis which the audience feel as if they are attracted too, and due to the fact that Padme Amidala is a female the primary people that will be interested in her as an ideal partner will be males.

Looking more into the technological side of 'Star Wars Episode III' I have come to an understanding that the target audience is based around males due to the fact that when it comes to technology male viewers seem to be more interested. I know this because during the film quite a lot of the technology was controlled by the male characters within the film, and when the male side of the target audience see this they will feel more enticed in terms of their interest in the technology being used.

Age

I have come to understand that the age which 'Star Wars Episode III' is aimed at are people from the ages 18-26, this is due to the fact that a lot of the problems that occur during this film are relatable to people roughly within this age range. The best example of this is the political views which this film consists of, the reason this relates to people within this age range is because this is roughly the beginning of their political life's, meaning the will have to make decisions which also occur during the diegesis of this film.

Another reason why I believe 'Star Wars Episode III' is aimed at an older and more mature audience is due to the fact that there are quite a lot of violent scenes that are seen as highly inappropriate for younger viewers, the best example of this is during the final scene in the film where Anakin is hacking and slashing people in half, therefore this film is made for an older audience.

I believe 'Star Wars Episode III' has been produced for an older audience due to the fact that the diegesis really well structured in terms of how it relates to our modern world, therefore an older audience will have a better understanding due to the fact that war is a common issue between both our world and this diegesis world. Due to this I believe that the older viewers would have a better understanding of this.

'Star Wars Episode III' is designed for an older audience due to the religious aspects that occur during the film. The reason why I believe that this is designed for an older audience based on this is because, older viewers will have a better understanding on religious aspects, for example the force.

Lifestyle

The NRS or National Readership Survey Ltd is an organisation that specialise in demographic information.

Looking at my target audience and judging them based on their chosen film style I can understand that the lifestyle category which the target audience for 'Star Wars Episode III' are between the Settled Suburban's and Nest Builders category within the demographic classification category. I have also come to an understanding that the people who are interesting in my chosen film are preferably people that are interested in Science Fiction films.

Settled Suburban's: Examples from the film that  influence them - families?
Nest Builders  : Examples from the film that influence then: young, teens, just starting out (new responsibility - career, ideal self )

The way in which 'Star Wars Episode III' connects to an audience member within the demographic category of a Settled Suburban's is through the representation of families throughout the film. Throughout this film you can denote Anakin and Padme holding each other, this to a Settled Suburban audience connotes  love and happiness due to the fact that they can relate to the romance which is projected within the film.

'Star Wars Episode' also has a connection to Nest Builders, this is due to the fact that Nest Builders are young people that are starting out a new position or responsibility. The reason why I have said that 'Star Wars Episode III' connects to Nest Builders on the demographic scale is because within the film Anakin has been granted a promotion to have his own Padawan

One of the reasons why I believe that the target audience will be placed in these categories is due to the fact that these people will have a bit of disposable income due to them being employed. Through having is disposable income there's fans of the film franchise are able to purchase products that relate to the franchise, this helps bring the audience closer to the films franchise without it affecting their finances.
`
I also believe that my audience would be into quite a lot of sci-fi games with quite an in-depth back story, this is because verisimilitude a game has the closer the audience will feel when playing the game. Due to this my target audience will be experiencing another style of escapism through playing sci-fi games such as 'Star Wars Battlefront' by taking their players to another world through gameplay.

Another interest my audience may be into is reading comic books, the reason why I believe this is because 'Star Wars' as a franchise has a lot of back story and history which is now primarily found in the comic books which cannot always be found within the films.

In terms of the lifestyle of the audience I believe that the audience will be into cosplay due to the fact that it will allow them to imagine their selves within the lives of their favourite sci-fi characters.

Spending Power

In terms of categorising my audience based on their social NRS social grade, I believe their spending power would be between B and C. The reason I believe that my target audience will fit into this social grade is based on the fact that my chosen film franchise has quite a lot of merchandise which means if they wanted to purchase it they would need a fair bit of disposable income in their pockets.

Another reason why I believe that my target audiences' social grade spending power is the B and C section on the demographic scale is because it is mainly considered a luxury to be able to buy things such as DVDs. This connotes to me that being able to buy the DVDs of the franchise you would need a fair amount of disposable income which would be considered quite a lot to a person outside of the ABC1 category of the demographic scale.

What I connote from the information that I have gathered from my audience is that they will have enough disposable income to be able to do whatever they want to a certain extent. The people within the C1 category will be able to afford more of the merchandise in comparison to my target audience within the C2 category, this is only based off their income and disposable, from this I have a clear understanding what my audience is able to afford in comparison to the others.

Thank you for watching my video based on my target audience. I hope this video has given you a deeper incite on how I have come to understand what my target audience for my chosen is.

Market Position LO1

The phrase 'market position' means how successful a company or business is in their field.
21st Century Fox is a successful company due to the fact that it has subsidiaries that branch off the main company creating a larger target audience for their products. Market share is also a way into finding how successful a company is, this is due to the fact you're able to view their market price.
You can also view the success of a company by looking at their sales unit, this allows you to view how much profit they produced for the product they produced, also you could look at the reputation of the company by finding out weather or not their products are award winning and if they are getting recognition that helps promote their brand.

LO1 Task 2 for Star Wars

Introduction

Hello, my name is Keenen Jeremiah Smith. And I will be writing a script on  'Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith'.

Purpose

The purpose of Star Wars Episode III is to entertain its viewers through spectacle in example of this is the ending scene of the film where Anakin Skywalker (Darth Vader) and Obi-Wan have a high in action fight. This creates spectacle due to the fact that the audience will feel enticed amount of visual effects displayed with a spine chilling fight scene.

Genre

The primary genre of Star Wars Episode III is a Sci-Fi movie, this genre is connoted due to the fact that it takes place of a multiple amount of worlds with a multiple amount of different raced life form. Another reason why the genre of this film is a sci-fi is due to the fact that during the movie you can denote a lot of hover mobiles and aircrafts, this connotes that this film is a sci-fi film due to the fact there are quite a lot of futuristic aspects during most scenes of the film. The reason this film relates to the genre is due to the fact that this film allows the audience to feel the full experience of inter-galactic travel by traveling to other worlds.

In terms of the sub-genre of Star Wars Episode III, it is also an Action, adventure and Fantasy. The sub genre is the secondary genre of the film.  I think the reason why this film is also classified as an action, fantasy film is due to the fact that there are a various amount of action scenes during this film that create a lot of spectacle for the viewers. Also the reason why this film comes under the sub genre of fantasy is because there are quite a lot of mystical elements of this film that allow the audience to fantasies about the many aspects that can happen during this film.

The form film is also classified as a feature film, this is due to the film being over 90 minutes long. You're able to buy Star Wars Episode III online, on DVD/Blu Ray, by download or by pirate copy. Due to the various amount of platforms this film has been produced on I get an understanding that this film was designed for a mass audience. The only reason why this film isn't available in cinemas currently is due to the fact that its been out for quite a while now therefore spectacle has gone.

Style

Star Wars Episode III's style is set in a  futuristic universe that seems so real it creates verisimilitude with the audience, this connects more with the audience because they believe that they're actually part of this world due to the verisimilitude of the film.

The reason I think they chose to base this film in the distant future in another universe from ours is because it will allows us as the audience to believe that anything is possible, this is due to the fact that this film doesn't take place in our galaxy so we don't exactly know that this isn't possible.

Content & Meaning

I believe that Todorov has the best description of the narrative in terms of stating that most films have a 'narrative structure', this means the film is built up of an: equilibrium, this occurs when everything within the story is balanced and there is nothing wrong, a disequilibrium, this is present when a problem occurs within the diegesis, and a resolution, this is where everything becomes balanced again but not as balanced as the beginning of the film.

The reason why I think Star Wars Episode III follows this style of narrative is due to the fact that it follows exactly this style of narrative. For example the opening of this film showed a great example of a equilibrium within the diegesis, I know this because within this scene I can denote Anakin Skywalker laughing and joking while flying through the battalion of imperial droids with his master, this connotes to me that he is enjoying the time he is having with his master. The reason why this is the equilibrium of the film is because there are no problems occurring during this scene which means everything is balanced.

The disequilibrium occurs during the film when Anakin joins the dark side. We come to understand that this is the disequilibrium because we can denote Anakin's eyes have turned to a bloodshot golden  colour and he begins to wear a dark robe with a hood. This connotes to us as the audience that his nature has changed due to the fact that his eyes went from normal to bloodshot, the reason he dark robe connotes that he has now changed is because  stereotypically dark colours represent evil, and due to the fact that he is wearing a hood connotes that his has been engulfed by the dark side.

Star Wars Episode III's resolution occurs during the end of the film. This takes place when Obi-wan is finding Anakin's children a new home, we come to understand that this is the resolution to the film due to the fact that it looks like there is peace on the planet, during this scene I can denote a sunset, this connotes to me peace due to the fact that sun sets are considered very peaceful to look at, and by using it during that scene gives the audience a general understand of peace

Mise en scene

Location

Star Wars episode III is set in a galaxy far away from our on a  planet named Currosant, which is commonly referred to as the home of the Jedi within the diegesis of this film. This fits into the narrative of the film well because throughout the film we come to understand that the Sith are slowly fighting to take control of Currosant and wipe out the Jedi.

Costume

The costumes I can denote during the scene I am currently looking at are different for both of the Jedi characters, this is mainly due to the nature of the character themselves. Looking at the costume of Anakin Skywalker I can denote dark robes that are fitted around the antagonists figure, by using dark colours we can connote that stereotypically this character is the antagonist due tot the fact that black is most commonly associated with evil and a negative colour.

But looking at the clothing that Obi-Wan wore you can denote a white  tanned robe which is quite lose around him. To me this connotes that he is the protagonist, I have gathered this information based on the fact that stereotypically we tend to use the colour white to represent good and innocence.

Props

Throughout this whole scene during the disequilibrium of the narrative the primary prop used was the lightsaber, this is because this weapons is commonly used by the Jedi as a weapon of peace and  in the hand of the Sith lightsabers are connoted as weapons of destruction. During this scene the protagonist and the antagonist both use lightsabers as props during this scene but as the scene progresses a difference begins to appear between both of these props. This occurs when Anakin is fighting Obi-Wan and his lightsaber turns from blue to red, this connotes to us a change in his nature meaning he has completely changed. In a sense you can relate the colour of the lightsaber to dominance, by having a red lightsaber you're seen as more dominate due to red being connoted as an aggressive colour in comparison to blue which is more of a calm colour.

Iconography

In terms of iconography, the most iconic feature of 'Star Wars' films are the lightsabers, this is because when most people denote them they automatically connote either hope or fear depending on their colours,

Colours

Within the scene I have been watching colour and lighting have been used to connote to the audience the mood. If you look within this scene there is hardly any light, and the only source of lighting is the lava in the background of this scene, this connoted anger or rage for the audience that viewed this scene, this makes the audience feel the tension within this scene due to the low key and the shadowed environment.

Gestures

During my chosen scene from 'Star Wars Episode III' you can denote a certain gesture that Anakin does during this scene. You can denote Anakin raise his hand in a chocking hold position, this connotes to the audience that he is using the force to strangle his wife. This also reinforces the genre dominance in the male character of the film, due to the fact that Sci-Fi films remind the audience that anything is possible within their genre.

  Sound

During the scene I have chosen you where Anakin and Obi-Wan are fighting you can denote the sound of lava bubbling, this is a diegetic sound because during this scene it would appear to the audience that the actors could also hear the sound of this, which connotes that there is quite a bit of tension/panic currently going on during this scene.

Another example of diegetic sound that occurs during this scene is the sound of mechanical devices screeching and steam pumping out of them. This is diegetic sound due to the fact that audience and the actors are hearing this during this scene which connotes to me that something is disequilibrium due to the fact that the noise they are projecting sounds like they're shutting down.

Non-diegetic sound is the sound that only the audience can hear, this means the characters within the diegesis are unable to hear what the audience is hearing. During this scene the main non-diegetic sound you can hear is the 'force'. This connotes the power they're projecting within this scene without the audience being able to see it, it almost amplifies the power they already have and adds more tension for the audience viewing.

Camera Work

During the ending scene of Star Wars Episode III you can denote that the camera shots they have tried to use during this scene so that the audience get a better understanding of how the characters are feeling is a medium close up. The reason why they have chosen to use this camera shot type is because its not too close, yet not too far away for us as the audience to get a good understanding of how the characters are feeling during the scene

If you look at the opening scene of the end part of the film you can denote that the camera crew had decided to input a medium long shot of Anakin Skywalker to connote how he is feeling through body language. You can denote Anakin standing up tall with an angered expression on his face, this connotes to us that he is furious and is ready to fight. Reinforcing male dominance of the character by use of body language during this scene.

Also during this scene the camera shot type turns into a close up to view the facial expression of Obi-Wan so that the audience understand how he is feeling. During this scene you can denote that Obi-Wan has a look of shock yet disappointment of his face, this connotes to us that he doesn't want to fight Anakin but he has to do it in order to protect others.

Wide shots are done during the scene where Anakin and Obi-Wan are fighting in order to show the location of where their fight is taking place. This gives the audience an idea on how much tension there is based on the wide shot of the location almost making the character look insignificant compared to their fighting location. Due to the location making the characters look insignificant during this scene because of the harsh environmental problems that were occurring the audience would feel more interested, therefore this would create more spectacle

The final scene of the film you can denote a close up of Obi-Wan screaming at Anakin, during this scene the camera crew decided to use a shallow depth of field in order to make the character the main point of focus, therefore capturing more of the emotion he was expressing without loosing focus on him.

Editing

Looking at the editing techniques used during the production of this film you can denote that during one scene you can see that an Action Match shot is used in order to continue a scene where both the protagonist and antagonist are having a conversation. This is seen when Anakin and Obi-Wan are both spinning their lightsabers around each other and this continues onto the next location where they stop spinning their lightsabers and clash with each other.

The next feature of editing I could denote during the scene I had selected was an eye line match. This occurs when Anakin, is laid down on the table and is looking directly at his lightsaber to reach for it using the force. This editing type in a way is very similar to shot reverse shot editing feature in the sense that there is a link between the two images.

Throughout some scenes in Star Wars Episode III you can denote that a form of continuity editing in the form of cross cutting. This has been used in order to change the scene to a new one, this is repetitive throughout to film to capture something that is happening during the same time but during as different scene.

During the final scene the main form of editing the camera crew decided to input during their footage were a mixture of action shots and eye line shots in oder to make the audience feel as if they were actually within this scene while they were watching it. Also a lot of shot reverse shot structures were used during the dialog scene during this part of the film. This shot is also used to show the binary opposition of the two characters by dividing them by age stereotypically by showing dominance by age.

Production Process

Thinking about the pre production stages of creating this film I have come to an understanding that the first step during the process the production crew would have to encounter is developing a script. This is done so that the actors have a general idea on what to say during the recording of the film and in what tone they should say it, this is possible one of the most important parts of pre production due to the fact that you cannot produce a film without a script. But possibly the most important feature of pre production is the creation of a storyboard, this is due to the fact that this is required to inform the camera crew what type of camera shots and angles they would need to use during the production of the film.

Production of the film itself would require the actors and the camera crew to follow both the script and storyboard for the production stage of developing a film. within the production stage of the film, the production crew would have to ensure that they have all the required props, locations and costumes. This is the most crucial stage in terms of actually producing the film itself, during the production stages of this film they would've changed the locations of some places due to it being too dangerous to actually film in these places.

In terms of the post production process of creating 'Star Wars Episode III', I have come to an understanding that when producing some scenes that they couldn't film at due to the danger risk they would have to use a green screen, this is done to make the location look verisimilitude and fits in with the diegesis of the film itself, also the production crew would have to add in special effects and sound effects that fit In with both the specific weapons being used during the scenes and the machines being used also. This is basically the finishing touches in terms of the production process when creating 'Star Wars Episode III' because this is when everything within the film all begins to come together.

Thank You for listening to my script on Star Wars Episode III

LO1 Task 2 Changes

I have recently decided to change the film I have been studying. This is due to the fact that I personally thought that writing a script on 'Big Mommas House' would be hard due to the comedic characteristics within the film. I have recently decided to write my script on 'Star Wars Episode III Revenge Of The Sith', this is due to the fact that there is quite a lot of diegetic and non diegetic sound that plays a part during the film, where as 'Big Mommas House' was harder in terms of finding non-diegetic sounds.

Unit 1- Introduction, Ownership, Operating Models, Products, Market Position, Competitors

Introduction

Hello, my name is Keenen Jeremiah Smith and I have been asked by Education Wise to produce a series of educational resources for level 3 media courses.
I will be looking at the ownership, operating model, products, market position and the competitors of 21st Century Fox.

Ownership
21st Century Fox is a conglomerate company founded by Keith Rupert Murdoch, who is the founder, chairman and CEO of Newscorp, which is the second largest media conglomerate in the world. Newscorp is the world’s leading newspaper company which has other subsidiaries working under their supervision. Newscorp is also the parent company alongside 21st Century Fox; these two companies own a large branch of  cross media subsidiaries that work under their supervision with different roles to meet their specific areas of work.
It is apparent from the information available that 21st Century Fox’s subsidiaries operate as a cross media company, which means that they produce merchandises for multiple media organisations, an example of this would be 20th Century Fox and Fox, the two subsidiaries specialise in two different types of media, 20th Century Fox is in charge of the movie production whereas Fox is in charge of television/ broadcasting. 20th Century Fox have done a few joint ventures when it comes to producing media products, 20th Century Fox have used synergy with other companies such as: HP and Lightstorm entertainment to create avatar digital experience, which is a product that all these major conglomerates have produced together.

Warp Films is another film production company that are deemed as an independent company. In comparison to 21st Century Fox, this means that Warp Films are unable to use synergy within their company in order to advertise or screen their films. This means for independent companies such as warp that they will have to gain help from other companies in order advertise and screen their films to the general public.

Operating Models

While I was doing more research into 21st Century Fox I came to understand that the way 21st Century Fox use their subsidiaries in terms of an operating model is by horizontal integration, this means 21st Century Fox as a conglomerate company have full control of the production, distribution and the consumption of their products. The reason 21st Century Fox are able to use horizontal integration during film production process is due to the fact that they have quite a lot of subsidiaries that can help them in terms of producing and distributing their product. I compared 21st Century Fox with Warp to get a better understanding on how similar and different these two companies are from each other, what I came to understand when it make to similarities with these two companies were that they both go through the same process in terms of promoting their product by some stages of horizontal integration although the main difference is that due to the fact that Warp is an independent company it doesn't have the subsidiaries required to complete the process of horizontal integration. This means Warp have to go down the pathway of vertical integration, meaning they have to collaborate with different companies in order to achieve their target goal when it comes to either the production, distribution or the exchange of their product. Due to the fact that Warp aren't as big a conglomerate as 21st Century Fox, this means they have to do a lot of joint ventures with companies such as channel 4 and Film 4 to help advertise their media during the film production cycle.

Products

20th Century Fox produce a large range of media products to gain more attraction from their target audience, for example if you go onto the Fox TV website you can see all the different medias they produce like: Empire, The Simpsons, Bones, Glee, Family Guy and American Idol.  These mainstream shows are targeted at a mass audience that of people that enjoy some of these different types of genres, this is a grate example of how diverse the media products of 20th Century Fox are to the general public.
21st Century Fox also  specialise in other media types, to reach out to other people with different preferences when it comes to home entertainment, the best example of this media product is Fox News. The primary focus of Fox News is to read the news to the Fox customers, but there are different multi medias attached to Fox News that give viewers other information other than the news that benefit for entertainment purposes, the biggest examples of this on the Fox News website would be: Video, Politics, U.S., Opinion, Tech, Science and Sports. As you can see Fox News are trying to reach a wider range of topics for their target audience by selecting topics they might be interested in.

21st Century fox also have a subsidiary called  ‘Fox Business’, This media product allows users to manage the ‘Fox’ stock market. The ‘Fox Business’ website allows users to select a range of different media  tabs when searching the website such as: Markets, Industries, Economy & Policy, Investing, Personal Finance and  Business Leaders. The target audience for this website are preferably people with businesses that that are interested in purchasing stock  or to sort out their personal finance. By the look of the ‘Fox Business’ website I believe that  this  catered for a very specific group of people compared to the ‘Fox News’ website with is designed for a mass audience.

Market Position

We know 20th Century Fox is a successful company by looking at their market shares. If you look at the market shares from January 1st to September 6th you can see that 20th Century Fox rank 4th in terms of box office, the market share for 20th Century Fox are currently at 10.0%  with a total gross of $772.1 after making 10 movies, this shows us that 20th Century Fox is a very successful company.

20th Century Fox is also a successful company due to the fact that they have they right amount of recognition to hire A list actors such as  Leonardo De Caprio, Cara Delevingne, Terrence Howard and Taraji Henson. this shows the success of the company because these actors are classed as very expensive to hire for movies, by showing the general public that they're able to afford these actors therefore broadcasting the success of the company.

Also we understand that 20th Century Fox is a successful company due to the fact that they contain several subsidiaries that are part of their company, this shows the success of the company because it helps branch out their products to a wider target audience therefore getting more attention and increasing the publicity of the company. By increasing the publicity of the company you're increasing the publicity of the products the company sells, therefore you're creating more sales which generate more income which helps increase the success rate of the company.

20th Century Fox as a company in relation to other companies that produce the same media products are considered a much better company, for example if you look at Warp Films compared to 20th Century Fox you can see that 20th Century Fox has had a lot more box office hits in comparison to Warp Films, this is due to the fact that 20th Century Fox have a lot of the required equipment needed in order to produce an extremely successful box office film. Also as a company 20th Century Fox have a lot of subsidiaries that specialise in different areas of media compared to Warp who usually collaborate with different Networks and companies that help promote their products to the general public.

This would also mean that the subsidiaries linked to this conglomerate would have gained some recognition on an international scale. If you look at 20th Century Fox you see that this subsidiary has international success due to it being one of the worlds most popular movie developing companies going, due to 20th Century Fox being such a popular movie development  company indicates to us that they're a extremely successful company.

Competitors

When I comes to having a huge conglomerate company like 20th Century Fox you will encounter some competitors along the way that specialise in the same type of media. Looking at the competitors of 20th Century Fox I can see that Disney are the main rivals of 20th Century Fox, this is due to the fact that they both produce film products for a wide range audience which makes them one of the biggest competitors in the world for film next to 20th Century Fox. Although Disney are considered 20th Century Fox's biggest competitor you can see that recently the marketing position of Disney has dropped quite a lot this year.

Disney mainly specialise in the film media industry, which they share in common with 20th Century Fox although they tend to focus on a specific style of movie which is family orientated compared to 20th Century Fox who produce various styles and genres of films that best suit their target audience's liking.

Doing my research I found out that the second biggest competitor for 20th Century Fox is CBS Corporation, this is due to the fact that CBS specialise in the television which is also one of the cross media platforms that 20th Century Fox are focused on, currently CBS are the 2nd biggest competitors of 20th Century Fox but currently aren't as high in terms of value as 20th Century Fox. When it comes to stock price CBS Corporation was -0.48%.

20th Century Fox is considered the better company when it comes to selling cross media products with their competitors because they tend to cater to all the needs and requests of their target audience where as these other two conglomerates do not have as many subsidiaries as 20th Century Fox that  cater to all their audiences requests. Due to this they stand out far from their competitors in terms of diversity of their company, because 20th Century Fox as a conglomerate has such a huge fan base they're able to gain more income from their products in comparison to their competitors which is the biggest thing that stands out in terms of how the organisation is from its competitors.

Thank you for reading my case study on 20th Century Fox, and I hope now that you've got a more in depth and detailed study into how this leading conglomerate operates within society.
